bamako is a miracle
"bamako is a miracle" is a documentary film which tells the story of a musical encounter.

roswell rudd (photo) is an amazing trombone player, born in 1935 in the USA. he was involved in the historic free jazz movement and worked with musicians like cecil taylor, albert ayler and archie shepp. he also worked with ethnomusicology pioneer alan lomax.

when roswell decided to work with malian griots including famous kora player toumani diabate, afro blue chose to be there. during the month of january 2001, arnaud robert, samuel chalard and maurice engler shot the recording of roswell rudd's malicool record (distributed by universal music).

for the first time, a documentary film shows the real birth of music. from the very first sound to the last session, from financial issues (with producer verna gillis) to the final hug. it gives a clear idea of one of the most creative processes in music today. the fusion of remote traditions.

"bamako is a miracle", a documentary film by arnaud robert, samuel chalard and maurice engler, won the bartok award (best movie on music) at the 22nd ethnographic film panorama in Paris/ 2003. the jury was presided by french ethnographer and filmmaker jean rouch.
It also won the RFO SAT price (REGARD DU MONDE SUR L’AFRIQUE ET LES PAYS CRÉOLES) at the festival Vues D’afrique in Montréal 2004.
